Our Practice
A practice built on the weight of each matter
Sukhothai was formed in Bangkok to address criminal matters — from the first police contact through to bail and pre-trial hearings — with the care that a serious situation deserves.

How Sukhothai came to be
Sukhothai takes its name from the first independent Thai kingdom — a period associated with the early codification of law, written language, and civic order. We chose it not as ornamentation, but as a reflection of what this practice tries to do: work carefully with language, with statute, and with the specific facts of a person's situation.
The practice was established in Bangkok by practitioners who had each spent years observing how criminal matters unfolded when proper counsel was not present at the early stages. Police interviews conducted without advice. Bail applications filed without adequate documentation. Charge sheets received and not understood. The harm from each of these is often lasting.
We focus on three services that address those early, critical stages. We do not offer a broad menu. We offer attentive, experienced assistance at the points where it is most needed.
Our Mission
What guides our work
Accuracy before reassurance
We do not tell people what they hope to hear. We tell them what the statute says, what the charge requires, and what the realistic options look like. That honesty, even when it is difficult, is the foundation of useful advice.
Privacy as a baseline
A criminal matter touches on some of the most sensitive circumstances a person can face. Every consultation, file, and communication is handled with complete discretion. We do not discuss client matters outside the office.
Pace appropriate to the matter
Urgency and care are not opposites. Where a matter is urgent — a police summons received, a bail hearing scheduled — we respond accordingly. Where there is time, we use it to prepare properly rather than to appear busy.
The Team
Practitioners you will deal with directly
At Sukhothai, matters are handled by the practitioners you meet — not passed to assistants. You will know who is working on your file and how to reach them.
Prakit Khumsuwan
Senior Criminal Counsel
Fourteen years of practice across Bangkok's criminal courts. Prakit leads pre-charge investigation and police interview matters, with particular experience in cases involving foreign nationals.
Nattawan Wichitrattana
Bail & Pre-Trial Practitioner
Nattawan has prepared and presented bail applications before the courts of Bangkok and surrounding provinces for over nine years. Her documentation is thorough and her court manner considered.
Apirak Tarawong
Statutory Review Counsel
Apirak specialises in charge sheet and statute analysis. His written reviews are used by clients and their families to understand what a charge means in plain terms before decisions about full representation are made.
Our Standards
How we conduct each matter
Licensing & Registration
All practitioners at Sukhothai are registered with the Lawyers Council of Thailand and maintain current practising certificates. We operate in full compliance with the Legal Profession Act.
Client Confidentiality
All client information is protected under legal professional privilege and our internal confidentiality protocols. Files are stored securely and accessible only to assigned practitioners.
Case Preparation Standards
Each matter receives a structured review before we advise or act. We read the relevant statute, examine the charge documentation, and consider the procedural position before forming a view.
English-Language Conduct
All client-facing work is conducted in clear English where the client prefers it. Written reviews, attendance notes, and correspondence are prepared without reliance on external translators for the substantive legal content.
Transparent Fee Agreements
We confirm the scope and fee for each matter in writing before commencing. Our core service fees are fixed and stated on this website. No work proceeds without a clear understanding of cost.
Communication Commitments
We return calls and emails within one working day in ordinary circumstances. For pre-charge and bail matters, we aim to respond within the same business day. Clients are kept informed as a matter of course.
Our Expertise
Criminal defense counsel in Bangkok — what we bring to a matter
The Thai criminal justice system operates on procedures that are specific, sequential, and consequential. At the pre-charge stage, the statements made — and those not made — can significantly affect how a matter develops. At bail hearings, the documentation presented, and the manner of its presentation, shapes what the court considers. At the charge sheet stage, understanding what the prosecution is actually required to establish helps a person make informed decisions about how they wish to proceed.
Sukhothai works in these three areas with practitioners who have attended police stations, filed bail applications, and analysed charge documents across Bangkok's main criminal jurisdiction for more than a decade combined. This is not advisory work conducted at a remove — it is practical, attended, and specific.
For visitors and expatriates in Thailand, a criminal matter can be particularly disorienting. The language of the charge, the process of the investigation, and the structure of the courts may all be unfamiliar. Our charge sheet review service was designed specifically with this situation in mind — a fixed-price written analysis in plain English, delivered without unnecessary delay.
We are based in Lumphini, Pathum Wan, close to the commercial district and within straightforward distance of the central Bangkok courts. Our office is available for in-person consultations, and we can also accommodate telephone and video consultations where in-person attendance is not practical at short notice.
